What a 3D print really costs
Most hobbyists quote filament cost only — "that's a 50-cent print." The real number is usually 2–3× higher once you count the printer paying itself off and the occasional failed print. None of those costs are scary; they're just invisible until you add them up, which matters the moment you print for friends, sell prints, or decide whether a $3 STL file is worth buying instead of designing for an evening.
The four components
- Filament — grams used × spool price per gram. A $22/kg spool is 2.2¢ per gram; a typical 35 g desk accessory is about 77¢ of PLA.
- Electricity — power draw × hours × your kWh rate. A 120 W printer for 3.5 hours at $0.15/kWh is about 6¢. Real, but small.
- Depreciation — a $250 printer good for ~6,000 print hours costs about 4¢ per print hour. Nozzles, belts, and build sheets ride along in this number.
- Failure allowance — if 8% of prints fail, every successful print quietly carries 8% of a wasted one. This is the line most calculators skip and the reason shop quotes feel "expensive."
